In 1956, the State of Virginia was organized into four districts for Little League
program management. These districts were as follows:
|
District 1 - Bristol, Virginia
District 2 - Portsmouth, Virginia
District 3 - Front Royal, Virginia
District 4 - Falls Church, Virginia |
At that time, District 4 covered an area from Arlington to Richmond. The first District
Championship Game was played at Lee-Graham Park in 1957, with Falls Church National League
team as the winner and going on to play in the State Tournament held in Bristol, Virginia.
Navy Captain "Red" Coward, of Falls Church, was the first District 4 Administrator, but
served only six months due to military re-assignment. He was followed by John Pyron,
Ed Pennypacker, Bill Hayden, Andy Cassells, Ren Morani, and Michael Pobat.
District 4 grew to over 34 Leagues and in 1970 was restructured into District 4, District
9 (Springfield) and District 10 (Fairfax). There are currently 16 Little League Districts
in Virginia.
Virginia District 4 is part of the Southeast Region and has 14 Leagues providing baseball,
softball and challenger programs to over 5,000 boys and girls ages 5 to 18. Our first
Challenger Program was inaugurated in 1990 by Reston Little League. District 4 has a rich
history of successful tournament play with Vienna Little League sending a team to
Williamsport in 1972 after winning the Southern Region Championship. In 1999, District 4
expanded to include Alexandria Little league – Welcome aboard! In 2001, girls softball
programs were added to Great Falls and Mason District Little Leagues.
In 2003, District 4 was authorized to expand its outer boundary to include the planet
Mars! Yes Mars. The purpose of this expansion was to promote science and technology
for kids. In 2004 there were several rovers landing on Mars and the goal of District
4 was to promote this activity with baseball and fun.
